Empire State Building fits radiator panels
News date: 15th August 2011
As part of a major green refit of New York’s Empire State Building, every one of the building’s 6,514 radiators has been fitted with an energy-saving panel.
The eight actions chosen from an initial list of sixty ideas are expected to save $6,000 a day in energy costs. Although cost-saving was the primary motivation for the project it is also calculated that greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 38%, equivalent to 105,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide over the next 15 years.
The building’s website confirms that ‘installation of the reflective insulation behind each of the 6,514 radiators was completed by October 2010…redirecting heat inward [and] reducing the project’s use of steam and, thus, operating costs.’
